Memory is an amalgam of what took place and what we remember. It is the first transformation of the real into fiction. A photograph stimulates memory, it is the image that brings out the anecdote drawn from memory. For long considered a document recording the real (Roland Barthes), the photographic image is what memory does not know how to describe. The family album is a film screen where the cold reality of images mixes with the fiction of stories excised from memory. I use film sequences where people become actors in my own past.
